Well, it appears that I've finally outgrown the Blogspot format. Its becoming harder and harder to look professional with only a blog to show off. It's not that I don't love you all. That's not it at all... Oh, come on... don't be like that...

Since I love letting people into my own little world of art, I've decided to relocate to a site that seems to be a better fit. At least for the time being. I've moved all my stuff over to a Tumblr site. It's a little more streamlined, in terms of viewing art. It provides me, as an artist, with more options for displaying my art. plus, it allows me to use the domain name that I secured a couple months ago.

Anyway, I just thought I'd let you all know, so you can continue to keep tabs on my art. You know, if you wanna. No biggies.

I've been in college for a long time. I haven't always been the best student. Sometimes I haven't even considered myself a student, and I'm sure there are more than a few instructors who would agree with that. I've been a part-time student, as well as full-time, quarter-time, martini-time, and double-time.

But as of last week, I'm finished.

I don't ever have to step foot in a classroom again without remuneration. Yeah, I'm an adult now, so I can throw out big words like that. I can also sit here at my desk, in my sweatpants, drinking coffee, from sun-up to sun-down if I want to. (I don't.)

Every Spring, the Academy of Art University puts on a fancy show to display all their departments' best work. After 5 years of submitting work, I was accepted into the show. And accepted big-time. I believe I have a total of 11 pieces in the Spring Show this year. I also received a Runner-Up Award for an excerpt from my mini "Gran'pa, tell me a story...". The show runs until July 31st and is open to the public. There's a ton of great work this year and I recommend everyone swing through the building if you've got a few minutes to spare.

I also wanted to say Thank You. Thank you to everyone who has visited this blog, or visited me at one of the conventions I've been to, or helped support me in any way. I've made new friends this year who've helped me achieve goals I didn't even know I had. I'm also lucky to have an incredible web of friends and family who have never let me move any direction but forward. They've put up with my never-ending college career through it all, and always pushed me to work harder than I thought I could. Thank You all.

Enough talking. I'm going to make some art. Expect rapid updates and the unveiling of an actual website soon.

The stories about Paul Bunyan have always kinda bugged me. He's huge, and he's got a huge ox as a companion. But how did he get that big? When did that happen? A recent school project challenged me to figure it out.

I've discovered that Paul wasn't always a huge lumberjack. In fact, he was a pretty puny dude for a long time. The other 'jacks in the company wouldn't let him forget it either. So Paul sets out on a trek through the woods to find a hermit who brews his own strength elixir. Along the way he learns the true meaning of strength.

Alright, I'm still working on the pitch. But the story's all there. You'll see.

As I've been working on this project, I've grown more and more attached to it, and have decided to try and finish it. I'm hoping to have it finished by October. These are some very early studies for the upcoming self published book.

Meetin' Beaton.

I was lucky enough to meet Kate Beaton, who makes hilarious comics, over the weekend at the Stumptown Comics Fest in Portland. I wasn't lucky enough to keep from embarrassing myself. She was very forgiving though, and didn't make me feel like a slobbering fanboy. Thank you, Miss Beaton, for making me laugh with your comics, and not letting me feel like a fool for stammering when I met you.

UPDATE:

I sent this little cartoon off to Miss Beaton late last night over the Twitter, and was pleasantly surprised to see a response this morning. We had a brief exchange (via Twitter):

KB: Hey! Did I do that? You must have caught me off guard, I am sorry! Nothing to be embarrassed about at all!

me: i'm pretty sure you only reacted that way in my head. You were nothing but nice!

KB: I wasn't around my table much the second day because I didn't have anything to sell and my hand was cramping from sketches. Aw!

me: any idea if you'll make it out for APE in October?

KB: oh I really liked APE, so hopefully. And hopefully I will have a new book then!

me: well I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. You've got a bunch of fans out here in SF.

The Stumptown Comics Fest was only my second convention. Ever. I kicked off my convention career with WonderCon at the beginning of the month and was blown away. That con-- that weekend-- was a rough one. Low sales, combined with massive crowds and a hangover of varying degrees for all three days was something I wasn't looking forward to repeating any time soon.

Portland was a breath of fresh air. Shay and I decided to drive from San Francisco, since neither of us had ever driven north before. It was a beautiful drive. Beautiful. But very, very long. Next time we'll fly to spend more time in the city and have a chance to relax a bit. The city of Portland is so clean I swear I could have eaten right off the sidewalks. Not even a cigarette butt. No graffiti, no litter, nothing.

The convention was such a different atmosphere from what I'd experienced at WonderCon. It was considerably smaller, attracting the indie/self-published/do-it-yourself crowd, and an assortment of smaller publishers, like Dark Horse, Top Shelf, Fantagraphics and Drawn & Quarterly. The special guests were accessible and friendly. In addition to Kate Beaton, I ran into Dean Haspiel (all over the place) and Leland Purvis who were kind enough to take the time not only review my modest portfolio, but to give me some advice and talk shop with me. It was a treat to say the least.

Comicraft's JG Rochelle also took a look through my portfolio. I met him at APE last year, and wanted him to see my professional portfolio this time, rather than the hastily assembled binder that I'd shown him in October. He was very encouraging and even remembered my mini. It was a neat moment.

And I sold almost all of my books. I think I have 3 or 4 copies left of everything. It was such a dramatic difference from the huge event that was WonderCon. Portland loves comics so much that the local libraries were out shopping at Stumptown. The Multnomah County Library bought a big stack of my books in the first couple hours of Saturday!

Neither of my books won a Trophy Award, but after checking out the competition, I was awful flattered to be up against such competition. The winners absolutely deserved their awards.

All things considered, it was a fantastic trip, lovely crowd, beautiful city, and I can't wait to do it all again next year. Thank you, Portland.

The Stumptown Comics Fest in Portland, Oregon is on the horizon. And by horizon, I mean next weekend. About a month ago, some of the Writers Old Fashioned folks decided to mail in some of our mini books to the nice folks puttin' on the Fest in an attempt to win one of the coveted Trophy Awards.

If you've been paying attention, then you know that last year Miss Emily Stackhouse, and then fiancé, now husband, Nicholas Shahan won the Trophy Award for Outstanding D.I.Y. book. And Jason McNamara with Paige Braddock were nominated for Outstanding Small Press.

Well, this year Writers Old Fashioned is taking Stumptown by storm. Or with STORM. Whichever one's funnier. Because between us, we've received 6 NOMINATIONS!

I've been pretty amped about this show for a while, but this cemented it. I'm going to just float through this week... Thank you Stumptown!

UPDATE: Black Diamond's Steep Trail Amber Ale just won a gold medal at this year's World Beer Cup! Congratulations guys!

For the past couple of months I've been working on a label for Black Diamond Brewery's new Imperial Porter, Peak XV. It was originally to be called something else entirely, but the family of a certain sherpa wasn't too stoked about letting them use his name and likeness. As a result, the design had to be altered a bit to prevent any sort of lawsuit. It took a few weeks for the redesigned label to be approved by the FDA (I think thats who it was... not totally sure).

And now, I'm fairly certain, the label design has been given the green light. So I figure its safe to post the artwork. I'll be promoting the crap outta this beer when it hits shelves. Just a warning.

Here's a little taste of a personal project thats been rattlin' around in development hell (my noggin) for a few months. I still need to figure out what to do with ol' Notch Landers. Maybe I'll figure out a way to tie him into the world of Doc Laser...

Last weekend's WonderCon was a blast. A huge 'thank you' to everyone that made it out. It was my first convention, and it was a bit overwhelming, but having a ton of familiar faces around made it easier to keep myself balanced.

I was lucky enough to make some great contacts, Paige Braddock! Klaus Scherwinski! and I got to spend some time with my favorite San Francisco based writer's collective, Writers Old Fashioned. I even sold some books. On an awesome, personal note, I got to give The Reverend Dave Johnson a copy of BeardMonth 2010. I also scored some sweet Dave Johnson original Juggernaut drawings for ridiculously cheap.

Our table was also right next to Ron Lim, who drew the entire Infinity War series for Marvel. Alright, I thought it was kinda cool. Not as cool as being next to Mike Mignola last year, but pretty neat for a first con.

And yes, I was taking a little pull from a flask. But I wasn't the only one. And I feel bad that this is the best picture that I have of this event. And it was also late in the afternoon. Its not like I was drinking all morning or anything...

That lovely lady next to me is Australia's own Miss Stephenny Godfrey. She's going to be in Portland at the Stumptown Comics Fest later this month, along with STORM, Jason McNamara, and myself. We'll be slingin' funnybooks, drinkin' drinks, and trying to buddy up to Paul Pope. Meanwhile, Shay's going to try and charm the socks off of Kate Beaton.

Alright, enough outta me... back to work...

WonderCon is this weekend. That means a lot of things are happening. Lets just go down the list:

Friday at noon: I've got my suit dry-cleaned, my hair cut, my faced shaved (mostly), and my portfolio as prepared as I think I can get it. Time to go meet with C.B. Cebulski, Marvel Comics' Talent Scout, and see what we can do about gettin' me some work.

Immediately followed by WonderCon setup at the Writers Old Fashioned booth. We're in Artist's Alley, table AA098. It's the row with David Finch on the end. We'll be slingin' some solid funnybooks somewhere behind the massive line.

Friday night: Isotope Comics is hosting one of it's world famous Tiki Tours. This time around it's featuring superstar artist Dave Johnson, the Bay Area Derby Girls, and as always, more tropical drinks than you think you can possibly pour down yer gullet.

WonderCon continues all day Saturday. I'll be sneaking around the convention center, hitting up IDW and BOOM! Studios' portfolio reviews, so keep your eyes peeled. I'll be in a suit...

Saturday night is the big bash at Isotope, 100 Proof Hex, with so many creators coming that you'll think you're still at the convention. Darwyn Cooke is headlining that list. I'll be working the door, trying to stay vertical. Oh, and I'll be wearing a suit.

If I'm still alive on Sunday, I'll be at the Writers Old Fashioned booth, hopefully bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. Possibly still wearing Saturday's suit. Guess you'll have to come by and check.

A little busy, right?

Last week I finally got serious and made a necessary purchase: a new Epson printer. After the package arrived, and I got it all unpacked, I realized that it was too big for my workspace. I was also out of power outlets. So I had to move my workspace. I'd been working in a glorified closet for the past year, and it was time for me to graduate to a full fledged room.

But a bigger workspace means a bigger mess, so here it is, as clean as it will probably ever be.

Since the beginning of the new year I've been pretty busy. Not only have I started my last full semester of college (which has been a long time comin'), I've also jumped headlong into the world of independent comics by registering at two upcoming conventions (WonderCon and Stumptown).

In addition to all that, I've been getting a pretty steady trickle of illustration work. A little job here, and a little job there. Nothing too serious, but enough to keep me really, really busy. One of those jobs is finished and I've been given the 'all clear' to post the art. I was fortunate enough to get a book cover project for a minister out of Stockton, CA named Brent Randall. It was a lot of fun to work on, and a great learning experience. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction Dan.

Shay had an MRI the other day. (She's fine, don't worry. She has a work-related shoulder injury, and the University is trying to figure out what to do with her.) She was alright with being jammed into a tube until she was told she couldn't move. And to add insult to injury, they gave her some headphones that were pumpin' out the jams.

Anyone who's ever had any kind of public critique knows what it feels like to have your work analyzed and torn apart. Its not a great feeling, but I appreciate the critiques that hurt, more than the ones that leave me all fuzzy inside. Anyone can tell you that your work is great, but you'll learn more from the person that tells you it stinks. And you'll learn even more from the person who tells you why.

I had a pretty solid critique this morning. And a rough one on Monday, too.

Just a quick post to show off some current work. This particular piece, designed for a book's back cover, wasn't approved, so I figured I could post it. I was happy enough with the way it turned out, but it wasn't necessarily what the author was thinking of. I'll post the front cover and revised editions as soon as I get approval. I've been really busy for the last couple of weeks, and the BEARDMONTH blog is taking up most of my free time. I do have some new drawings to post, just as soon as I can get them colored. I've also secured some illustration jobs in the next few weeks, so that will be posted soon, too.

A friend commissioned me to draw "Mario and Luigi holding hands in San Francisco" with some Mario Bros. characters thrown into the mix. It was a Christmas gift, so I couldn't post it until now. I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out. Coloring the entire piece digitally, with Photoshop this time, was a nice learning experience.

New Art, Art in Progress, and an APE mention.

First, some new figure studies. Both about 40 minutes, done with Faber Castell PITT brush pens on smooth layout bond. I like these pens way more than the pastels we're supposed to be using. The colors go down smooth and I retain control over the marks I make. I should start taking pictures with my camera instead of my phone...

Second, I'm beginning work on some paintings. I haven't ever been one to paint recreationally, but I've had an idea for a set of paintings for a little while, and thought they'd make a nice addition to my Etsy shop. Ideally, I'll be able to sell prints of them for real cheap, and the originals for a bit more. Inexpensive art is always more fun. I don't have anything to show yet, but if you like maps, you're likely to enjoy what's coming.

And last: my book, "Gran'pa, tell me a story...", was mentioned by Dean Haspiel in an article about APE a few weeks ago. I talked with Mr. Haspiel the night before while he was signing his new book for me at Isotope Comics. His wife (or girlfriend, I don't remember), Jen, introduced us, and she gave him a copy of my book. He was great, and I can't wait to run into him at expo's in the future. He also mentioned STORM's new book, "Princess Witch Boy", which is going to be a fantastic series.

Storm and I got to talk this week about an upcoming collaboration. Add in the book by Filmmaker Jerry Pyle, and that makes two future books to look out for.

For the past few weeks I've been working on my entry for this year's Isotope Award for Excellence in Mini Comics Competition. I've been concentrating on the art so hard that I've let the actual printing of the book slip the background. Last year I waited until the submission deadline, the day that they were due, to try and find a printer and got royally fleeced. I'd like to avoid that this year. But so far I've had a hard time narrowing down my choices.

There are plenty of places to have my pages printed (how's that for alliteration) in the Bay Area, but who to choose? I checked out some local zine websites, but didn't find anything that could help. I talked to a friend at Isotope, the inimitable Storm, but was unable to find a suitable printer.

Enter Mr. Gordon Silveria, full time Academy of Art faculty and all-around nice guy. Gordon gave me a few options and also pointed me in the direction of Mr. Dan Cooney, also on staff at the Academy of Art, who gave me another few.

Each site uploads your images and lets you arrange them in a variety of ways (Qoop has a downloadable program to help you design your layouts). You can select your paper, binding, size (there are a bunch of options here) and colors. Its exciting to see all the possibilities and makes me want to get through this project so I can start on the next.

After exploring each site, I think I'm going to go with Blurb. I ran the numbers a few times, and it looks like I'll get a better deal with them. Not by much, mind you, but every bit counts. I'll be able to have 20 copies printed, and Blurb will be able to print more on demand if the need should arise.

I'm posting these links in case you or someone you know is trying to publish a book and doesn't have a clue where to start. Hopefully this helps.

the idea as it stands:

a strip chronicling the misadventures of Krang (TMNT) and Herman von Klempt (Hellboy, I really wanted to draw a head in a jar). they soon join up with Jambi (Pee-Wee's Playhouse) and hilarity ensues as they encounter a body-less ensemble featuring the likes of MODOK, Andross (the boss from Starfox) and other video game bosses, enchanted mirrors, floating holograms, famous statues and even a cameo pulled from the pages of ancient myth.

i've been playing around with Corel Painter. i'm digging the possibilities. i recolored this old drawing of two ridiculous Marvel villains, M.O.D.O.K. and Arnim Zola. i went a little overboard on the airbrush spatter.

i've beaten the deadline again. second time in a row that i've finished ahead of schedule. i've revised the colors (saturation, mostly) and solved a few value issues (all in Photoshop), and i'm a little happier as a result.
