Hark! A Doofus. (updated)

Meetin' Beaton.

I was lucky enough to meet Kate Beaton, who makes hilarious comics, over the weekend at the Stumptown Comics Fest in Portland. I wasn't lucky enough to keep from embarrassing myself. She was very forgiving though, and didn't make me feel like a slobbering fanboy. Thank you, Miss Beaton, for making me laugh with your comics, and not letting me feel like a fool for stammering when I met you.

UPDATE:

I sent this little cartoon off to Miss Beaton late last night over the Twitter, and was pleasantly surprised to see a response this morning. We had a brief exchange (via Twitter):

Shazam!

Shazam! He's pretty magical. Hmm...

I did this for the BeardMonth show last month and finally got around to coloring it this week.

I'm going to add it to the BeardMonth book as part of a bonus edition for the Stumptown Comics Fest this weekend. They were nice enough to nominate my books that I figured I'd pump 'em up a little. This cartoon, along with a double spread image of Doc Laser, and a never-before-seen image will be for sale in Portland. Plus, I'll be there, too. You know... in person...

Also, I'm updating my Etsy site. So, look out. Cause its comin'...

The Spectre and Zatanna.

(This drawing was a pain in my ass every step of the way.)

I'm going to make these available as prints for purchase.
Individual prints or the entire set of DC Mystics.
Marvel Mystics to come soon...

Trophy Award Nominations!

STORM, Josh, Stephenny, me

The Stumptown Comics Fest in Portland, Oregon is on the horizon. And by horizon, I mean next weekend. About a month ago, some of the Writers Old Fashioned folks decided to mail in some of our mini books to the nice folks puttin' on the Fest in an attempt to win one of the coveted Trophy Awards.

If you've been paying attention, then you know that last year Miss Emily Stackhouse, and then fiancé, now husband, Nicholas Shahan won the Trophy Award for Outstanding D.I.Y. book. And Jason McNamara with Paige Braddock were nominated for Outstanding Small Press.

Well, this year Writers Old Fashioned is taking Stumptown by storm. Or with STORM. Whichever one's funnier. Because between us, we've received 6 NOMINATIONS!

I've been pretty amped about this show for a while, but this cemented it. I'm going to just float through this week... Thank you Stumptown!

Moon Knight Sketches.

I received some sample scripts from Marvel Comics yesterday. Was it yesterday? Yeah. Yeah, it was yesterday. One was a recent Moon Knight script. The other was something with The Runaways.

And I've got to admit, I don't know much about either book. But I have always kinda liked Moon Knight. So I decided to give Moon Knight some attention.

DC's Magicians.

Dr. Fate and The Phantom Stranger

The Demon and Deadman.

I've got a few more to do, but I plan on getting to all the main magical DC dudes.
I'm also planning on selling these as little 4"x6" prints.

Dr. Fate.

"Are you willing to face those gods of eld,
the fiery Baal -- cruel Moloch --
to save the world from Wotan?"

Big Boy Jobs.

UPDATE: Black Diamond's Steep Trail Amber Ale just won a gold medal at this year's World Beer Cup! Congratulations guys!

For the past couple of months I've been working on a label for Black Diamond Brewery's new Imperial Porter, Peak XV. It was originally to be called something else entirely, but the family of a certain sherpa wasn't too stoked about letting them use his name and likeness. As a result, the design had to be altered a bit to prevent any sort of lawsuit. It took a few weeks for the redesigned label to be approved by the FDA (I think thats who it was... not totally sure).

And now, I'm fairly certain, the label design has been given the green light. So I figure its safe to post the artwork. I'll be promoting the crap outta this beer when it hits shelves. Just a warning.

"Who ARE you?"

Here's a little taste of a personal project thats been rattlin' around in development hell (my noggin) for a few months. I still need to figure out what to do with ol' Notch Landers. Maybe I'll figure out a way to tie him into the world of Doc Laser...

Last weekend's WonderCon was a blast. A huge 'thank you' to everyone that made it out. It was my first convention, and it was a bit overwhelming, but having a ton of familiar faces around made it easier to keep myself balanced.

Deadman.

I've been thinking of Deadman all weekend and couldn't go to sleep without drawing him.

And a bonus, updated version:

Annabel Lee.

Samples from Edgar Allan Poe's Annabel Lee.

These are stanzas 4-6 of 6. The first 3 are going to receive similar treatment.
